The Elegance of the Modest Woman
The Toronto Star - Jan. 23, 2002
By R. Stevenson

While out for dinner last week with colleagues, we sat beside three 20-something women. There was the usual posing and glances exchange, and as they paid their bill two Muslim women entered and sat nearby. Whispers were quickly exchanged and we could hear, "Why do they wear those things anyway?" ... "I feel sorry for them" ... and so on.

As they filed out of the restaurant, we noticed they sported a mixed collection of the following: skin tight pants, short skirts, exposed midriffs, push-up bras, high heels, jewelry, see-through or plunging tops, piercings, lipstick and makeup, and one had breast implants for certain. We observed the two Muslim women as they were engaged in close conversation over coffee.

Their graceful features complimented their dark headscarves and warm eyes. Their natural gestures were flirty without even trying  - revealing natural beauty. And their clothes, while conservative, brought forth the hidden potential of something wonderful and truly feminine.

The idea of dressing modestly terrifies some western women - but why? Perhaps it would trample their "right" to show off. Would their self-esteem fall along with their hemlines?

After some debates, we identified the cost of the western "right" to flaunt. The Muslim women were free from the fashion trap -free to "just be" without posing, comparing, dieting and spending for the approval of men and each other. And they looked more desirable to us than the exhibitionists who were in the restaurant and parading on the sidewalk.

The sexual displays in our culture are so mainstream and competitive that modesty is seen as regressive. Yet, long term, when a man looks past the tight pants and heels, he will ultimately detect not confidence, but a certain unattractive desperation.

Modest women don't have that desperation - they don't compete in the arena of vanity. They have themselves - and that's the kind of attraction with legs to last the long run. Remember that the next time you feel sorry for a Muslim woman.

Assalamu Alaikkum one and all.

Yes. I wear the Hidjab. I hadn't ALWAYS worn it, but now I do.

Let's look at reality, here. I used to look at my own fellow Muslimahs whom I had seen wearing the Hidjab with much sympathy. The ponderous swaying of my long wavy hair caught much attention and I used to revel in it.

All at once, realization dawned unto me, and I KNEW that Islam was the only true way out of the sad state of affairs I found myself in. And slowly but surely, I found myself -  who I am to this world and more importantly,  to myself.

I donned the Hidjab, a total 180 degree turn from what I used to be. No more provocative necklines, no more hiked up skirt lengths. A beautiful, colourful scarf to hide my hair, and to frame my face from the world.

Many were those who welcomed this change, but then again, many more were those who just could not accept the change in me. I am no longer greeted by provocative stares by the odd man out in the streets. In its place, I have the Moslem students whom I teach at School walk up to me and kiss my hand as a sign of respect.

Most importantly, I just FEEL good. And I must say that i hadn't felt THIS good in quite awhile.

Sorry, in my sheer ignorance, I clicked it wrongly. Well wearing the scarf to school was an issue in Singapore recently. 4 Muslim school girls were suspended from school when their parents insisted that they wore scarfs to public schools.
This was hard on the heels of recent uncovering of a Al Qaeda cell in Singapore with advanced plans to bomb some American frequented and ferry points in Singapore.
What was more disturbing was that the Islamic organisation of Singapore who came out with a statement stating that the school girls were not obligated to wear scarfs before puberty. They did not explain that when the girls reached puberty, they will also not be allowed to wear the hijab in secondary school and also in junior college. Schools and institute in these region are still uniformed. And for girls, blouse and skirt.
Despite the fact that Sikhs in Singapore are allowed to wear their turban to school.
In Singapore, only when you are in Polytechnic or University then you are allowed to wear what you want.
We also have Madrasahs in Singapore, and theMadrasahs are often privately managed, did not follow main stream education in Singapore. The standard always differ from the main stream schools, but at least, the girls wear hijab from primary 1 till the day they leave the school. At least now the Madrasahs are making an effort to catchup, so the gaceful little innocents, with flowing headscarfs and innocent faces, will be given a chance to be on par with the national standard.

Great post

Keep it coming :rdg1

Just a word of advice though, in Islam we dont call humans angels. Angels are distinguished creatures of Allah they hve certain characterisitcs. They are neither  female nor male. And best of all they do not sin, but they do every thing Allah orders them to do. This is mentioned in the Quran: La ya^soonal-laha ma 'amarohom wa yaf^aloona ma yu'maroon. Surat Tahrim ayah 6.

So please note that we humans are different and do not resemble angels. To call a human an angel may in some cases render a person out of Islam and definitiely to call the angels females or to beleive that they are females is Kufur.
THis is also in the quran: Surat Anajm ayah 27: Those who do not believe in the hereafter are those who name the angels with feminine names.

i hope you can accept my advice knowing that i give it to you with my love for you and utter humility.    :ulv1

Keep smilin'..........:-) (F)

latest update on the Women in scarves
« Reply #9 on: Friday 15 March 2002, 05:20 »
:cwt

A supposedly Australian citizen with a name (Hugo Igorski) that fell off the back of a European truck sends a letter to one of Sydney's local newspapers criticizing a scene in which a Muslim family enters the local pools fully dressed. Published February 2002: He writes..

"A Muslim family entering the local swimming pool fully clothed was quite a shocker",  "how the attendants allowed such a breach of propriety is beyond me. This practice is unthinkable in all Western countries where hygiene is a priority and that incident was a clear indication that some Muslims refuse to accept that they are in Australia not Islam. What a show of contempt for our culture. They break their necks to get into Australia and some show this appreciation by pulling down our standards".

This show of utter discrimination surfacing towards Muslim women wearing the head scarf is a world wide trend that pulls in support of the saying of the prophet which means: a time will come upon my nation that to hold on to the religion of Islam will be for them like holding onto a lit hot bead.
