even this reply might be out of time, as being invited by webmaster of talk about Islam, let me tell you what i think that friend is.

apart from our mothers, who are (or were if they changed the world, May Allah's Mercy be with them) our unconditioned friends and with absence of any calculations, alhamdulillah i experienced that the friend is one who loves you in the Name of Allah.

loving the sake of Allah is a beautiful thing, you love not for money or to gain anything from that person but for the sake of Allah. A person you love in that way helps you in this ddunniya and helps you prepare for the hereafter.
