The Hijab and the West or the East?
« on: Tuesday 08 January 2002, 22:59 »
Bismillah.

This reminds me of about 12 years ago, when two girls in France were denied school entrance.  Reason: wearing a head scarf.  Why? it was considered offensive.

Sub7anallah our sisters have it quite hard sometimes in western countries.  They are often refused jobs because of it, and they often have to deal with dirty looks , etc...

Once my fellow student asked me " Can you use chairs and tables?", "Can your husband see your hair", etc....well at least those were questions.  Once a guy in the elevator told me "isn't the normal thing to wear a t-shirt and pair of shorts in the summer"..:no2  The normal thing is to cover one's ^awra anyways.  I was refused job interviews, and so on....

You know what's really sad? :-(  It's that in some countries a woman with hijab is denied certain jobs , and certain positions.  Real sad....

I heard about some companies in some  Muslim countries where they explicitely refuse to hire women with hijab.  What about those where women with hijab can not attend universities, ha?  Ya Allah!  ....Allah yahdeehum.  What was that word again?  Democracy?

Assalamou Aslaykom my dear sister :bg

You are right, a lot of muslim women have some problems either at work or school :( and maybe at the stores, or anywhere else :bsf2

However, I think that the head scarf or "Hijab" is not suppose to be a problem for you. At school, we should not care about the dirty looks we might have or the "weired" questions we might be asked. First of all, we are going to school, universities or whatevber, to learn, not to show off. But if we work hard to be very good students, trust me, the instruactors themselves will respect you and honor you. Students might also look up to you, when they see you like this, and especially when you show them that you are not effected by looks, or maybe even "tough situations". I have been asked many many questions, that may sound funny for us, but I like them when they ask! Because they give me the opportunity to explain to them everything, most of the West people, don't know, or never saw a woman covering her hair (of course not now, I bet they all know by now). If you show them  that it's ok to ask, they will be impressed, and after experience, you will gain their respect too.

Someone came to me once asking "have you ever seen you hair" ??? now come one! That made me laugh at that time, but I explained to that person a loooot about Islam, a lot more than just why I cover my hair.

If you are having problems at work, patience is a very good thing there, because after a while, everybody will start seeing the good worker they have, the one they need, and therefore you might also be respected and honored by them. However, if they did not accept you in a job becuase of your scarf then "too bad for them", they lost a great person who might even improve their company :lbw1 We are proud for who we are, moreober we are propud to be Muslims :bg

BUt I really feel bad for the women, the muslim and Mohajjabah woman in the East, who is allowed in some places to work because of her scarf! How could they be that ignorant??!! :dbs1 I can understand, in the West it's kind of strange for them, but in the middle-East??  Trust me, it's not only in the West that a Mohajjabah woman might face troubles, but everywhere, and here we should stand and show them that we are proud of what we are doing, because it is the right thing to do!

What do you think? :lo1 do you agree with me?

Thank you dear sister ^Ismatudeen :apl1
May Allah bless you
and reward you with good things (F)

Best wishes to all :smlv

Wa ^alaykum as salam.  Akramaki Rabbi.

Definitely sister True Muslim, we should not be embarassed.  :no2.  ON the contrary, it's an honor to wear the hijab.  I honestly can't imagine myself without it.   And indeed, if you're given the chance to put the foot somewhere and show them what you are capable of , they will probably value you.  That was my personal experience.  Questions do not really bother me usually, but the ignorance of some people.  A lot of people have us confused with followers of other religions.  Ya lateef.  I am sure we can come up with more and more ways to educate people about us.  Like this super valuable website, and maybe a book written one day about that? :lbw1 with the guidance of knowledgable people in religion.

As-salaamu^alaykum

Dear sister ^Ismatudeen,

Lets face it, you are like a pearl, :ww1 you and all the other Muslim women who wear the Hijab. We are unique and hard to find. We are protected by a "shell". Mysterious and rare.

Around people’s necks throughout this world, pearls are worn to demonstrate to us how true inner beauty yields true outer beauty. As beautiful as we are, not all see our beauty... many of them are just in denial... but who is worried? Certainly not me. I’m proud of who I am and I am not hesitant to say so.

If an employer chooses not to employ a woman just because she is wearing the Hijab, then it is their loss. As sister True Muslim said, "They lost a great person who might even improve their company."

Unfortunately i read through some articles about a University in Turkey that wouldn't allow women to continue, or even enter, a Medical University if they wore the Hijab. May Allah protect our sisters in Turkey. It seems that Muslim women are viewed as a threat to society.

Don't be intimidated by people who don't understand. A woman who covers herself with sincerity is not just stating something about what she accepts and believes, but she is also stating something about what she rejects. Perhaps that is what hurts. ;-)

May Allah protect our dear sisters around the world and grant them the sincere intentions.

The Hijab is a blessing. I thank Allah for the blessings He has granted us, without Him being obligated to do so.
