Okay, so this is what they say. It may have no real basis in the Shari'ah, but obviously they said it in good faith, right? Their intentions in coming out with this idea were merely geared towards the protection of Muslim families.
Let me ask you something: have you any idea how many Muslim families have been broken up due to women, AND men too, getting involved in questionable stuff on the internet? The MAJORITY of us are weak, men and women alike, and due to whatever problems we have in our lives we are more often than not inclined towards seeking external emotional support and someone to care for us... and the easiest way in which to do such a thing, these days, is through the internet. What happens next? When the wife is out, the husband goes to the internet to talk to his cyber-lover, and vice versa. Eventually the culprit is discovered and that's usually the beginning of the end of their marriage.
It would be beneficial for ANY married person, man OR woman, to have someone reliable watch over them as they use the Internet. What's your big problem with accepting that most women (and men too), whether they look pious or not, USUALLY get involved in Haram stuff in the cyberworld? The idea that ALL those who appear pious really are is just an illusion. It's that simple.
