Al- ^Aqidatut-Tahawiyyah

The Sunniyy Creed by Imam at-Tahawiyy

Introduction

Praise and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. We ask Allah to raise the rank of our master Muhammad, the last prophet and messenger, his Al, Companions, and followers and to protect his nation from whatever he feared for his nation.

The book "Al-^Aqidatut-Tahawiyyah", i.e., the Creed by at-Tahawiyy is one of the most invaluable books authored in the subject of the Islamic Creed.

In this text, Imam at-Tahawiyy clarified the creed of the Companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and of the righteous Salaf as per the methodology of Imam Abu Hanifa and his two companions Imam Abu Yusuf al-Qadi and Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan ash-Shaybaniyy.

He did not meet Abu Hanifah or his two companions. However, their knowledge reached him through the trustworthy channels of his students.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, Who said in Surat Muhammad, Ayah 19:

قال الله تعالى: فاعلم انه لا اله الا الله واستغفر لذنبك وللمؤمنين والمؤمنت

The scholars deduced from this ayah that the knowledge of Tawhid takes precedence over other religious knowledge. May Allah raise the rank of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) who in a hadith related by al-Bukhariyy, praised himself for being the most knowledgeable about Allah.

قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) : انا اعلمكم بالله واخشاكم له
رواه البخارى

Praised are the great scholars of Islam who highlighted the importance of the knowledge of Tawhid, like Imams ash-Shafi^iyy, Abu Hanifah, Malik, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Ibn ^Asakir, and others.

The importance of this book is that Imam at-Tahawiyy (died 321 H) is one of the Salaf (Forerunners) praised by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)
in his hadith related by al-Bukhariyy:

قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) : ((خير القرون قرنى ثم الذين يلونهم ثم الذين يلونهم)) رواه البخارى

It means: <<The best of the people are those of my [Prophet Muhammad's] century, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. >>

His book displays the Creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama^ah. It is a thorn in the eyes of the Wahhabiyys and other deviant groups who liken Allah to His creation. He shows that the creed of the great scholars of Salaf is contrary to the deviant creed of these misguided groups.

As usual, the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (AICP) is in the foreground of presenting and preserving the Islamic heritage, especially what relates to the Sunniyy Creed.

So, we present this book along with a short explanation of its terms derived from the two books "Idhharul-^Aqidah as-Sunniyyah" and "Ad-Durratul-Bahiyyah" explaining "Al-^Aqidatut-Tahawiyyah" by the Muhaddith, Faqih, Shaykh ^Abdullah al-Harariyy, may Allah raise his rank.

This illustrious scholar, Hafidh, Faqih, linguist, and Defender of the creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama^ah, Shaykh ^Abdullah al-Harariyy, ash-Shaybiyy, al-^Abdariyy the Mufti of Harar, may Allah brighten his face and give him victory, narrates this matn (text) with a continuous chain back to the great author himself Abu Ja^far at-Tahawiyy.

Shaykh ^Abdullah al-Harariyy narrates this book from:

*Shaykh Ahmad Ibn ^Abdil-Muttalib (the Imam of al-Masjidul-Haram in Makkah),

*from his grandfather, Mufti Dawud Ibn Abi Bakr al-Jabartiyy,

*from the famous scholar of Yaman (Yemen), Mufti ^Abdur-Rahman Ibn Sulayman al-'Ahdal,

*from his grandfather Yahya Ibn ^Umar al-'Ahdal,

*from Hasan al-^Ujaymiyy,

*from Ahmad Ibn Muhammad al-^Ajil,

*from Imam Yahya Ibn Mukrim at-Tabariyy,

*from the Judge Zakariyya al-'Ansariyy,

*from Hafidh Abu-Nu^aym al-Mustamli,

*from Abut-Tahir Ibn al-Kuwayk,

*from Ibrahim Ibn Barakat al-Ba^liyy (known as Ibnul-Furayshah),

*from Abu ^Abdillah al-Yuniniyy,

*from Hafidh Abu Musa Muhammad Ibn Bakr al-Madiniyy,

*from Abul-Fath Isma^il Ibnul-Fadl Ibn Ahmad As-Siraj Ibn al-'Akhshid,

*from Abul-Fath Mansur Ibn Husayn at-Tali,

*from Hafidh Abu Bakr Muhammad Ibn Ibrahim Ibn ^Aliyy al-Muqri,

*from the Imam and Hafidh Abu Ja^far Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Salamah al-'Azdiyy at-Tahawiyy.

We ask Allah to enable us to do the right deeds and to keep us guided on the straight path of the righteous Salaf.

Biography of the Author

Imam At-Tahawiyy (229-321 H)

The author is Imam, Faqih, and Hafidh Abu Ja^far, Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Salamah Ibn Salamah Ibn ^Abdil-Malik Ibn Salamah Ibn Sulaym Ibn Sulayman Ibn Janab, al-'Azdiyy, At-Tahawiyy, may Allah have mercy on him.

He accompanied his maternal uncle al-Muzaniyy, the most intelligent student of Imam ash-Shafi^iyy and learned from him. Afterwards, he left the Shafi^iyy madhhab and became a Hanafiyy. He learned from Ahmad Ibn Abi ^Imran and the Hanafiyy Judge Abu Khazim ^Abdul-Hamid Ibn Ja^far (died 292 H) and heard the Hadith from him.

Hafidh Ibn ^Abdil-Barr said: "[At-Tahawiyy] was among the most knowledgeable people of the madhhab of Abu Hanifah in addition to his knowledge of other madhhabs. Hafidh Ibnul-Mudhaffar, Hafidh Abul-Qasim at-Tabaraniyy, Abu Bakr Ibnul-Muqri, and others narrated the Hadith from him."

Ibn Yunus said: "At-Tahawiyy was trustworthy, reliable, and a very pious faqih. None of those who came after him was equal to him. "

The Creed of At-Tahawiyy
Abu Ja^far al-Warraq at-Tahawiyy

The scholar and competent authority of Islam, Abu Ja^far al-Warraq at-Tahawiyy from Egypt, may Allah grant him mercy, said:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

With the Name of Allah, the Merciful to the believers and non-believers in this world, and the Merciful to the believers only in the next world.

Explanation:
The author started his book with the Name of Allah, as is the habit of Muslim scholars, seeking the blessing from Allah.

This is an elucidation of the creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama^ah, which is in accordance with the doctrine of the scholars of Islam: Abu Hanifah an-Nu^man Ibn Thabit al-Kufiyy, Abu Yusuf Ya^qub Ibn Ibrahim al-'Ansariyy, and Abu ^Abdillah Muhammad Ibnul-Hasan ash-Shaybaniyy, may Allah reward them all for their deeds. It refers to what they believe of the fundamental articles of the Religion and of what they submit to the Lord of the Worlds.

Explanation:
The author states firmly that his book summarizes the beliefs carried by all of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama^ah, as presented by the three aforementioned Imams. Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama^ah are the Muslim laymen and scholars, who follow the creed of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and his Companions.

1. Guided by Allah, we believe and say about the tawhid of Allah: Certainly, Allah is One without a partner to Him.

Explanation:
The tawhid of Allah refers to believing that Allah is the Only God. Imam al-Junayd defined the tawhid as knowing the difference between the creation and the Creator. Allah is God, Who has no partner in His Self, Attributes, and Actions. Believing in the Oneness of Allah must be in the heart along with its oral declaration. Whoever utters the Two Testifications of Faith [1]  without believing in their meanings in his heart is not a Muslim.

[1]   The Two Testifications of Faith are: I testify that no one is God except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

2. Nothing is like Him. Nothing is beyond His Power. No one deserves to be worshipped other than Him.

Explanation:
No one or thing resembles Allah in any way, partially or totally. Although certain terms are used in reference to Allah and in reference to the creation, certainly the meaning of the word when it refers to Allah is not the same as its meaning when it refers to the creation. The Existence, Life, Knowledge, Will, Power, Hearing, Sight, and Kalam of Allah are different from those of the creation.

Everything is under the Power of Allah. God is the Creator of everything, i.e., He is the One Who brings things from non-existence into existence. This is meaning of creating which is exclusively attributed to God. Hence, no one is God except Allah, and no one deserves to be worshipped other than Him.

3. He is Qadim (Eternal), with no beginning.

Explanation:
Allah is the Eternal One Whose existence is without a beginning. Everything other than Allah has a beginning. Hence, everything other than Allah is a creation.
