Meanings of the word BID^A (Innovation)
« on: Wednesday 02 February 2005, 16:45 »
Bismillah,
 :bismi:  :ashhadu:  :hamdou:

There are two types of innovations mentioned in this hadith: the innovations of guidance and the innovations of misguidance.

What complies with the Qur'an, the Sunnah, the Ijma^ (scholarly consensus), and the sayings and practices of the Companions is an innovation of guidance, and what contradicts the Qur'an, the Sunnah, the Ijma^, and the sayings and actions of the Companions is an innovation of misguidance. This definition of the two types of innovations was given by many knowledgeable and trustworthy scholars of Islam; among them Imam ash-Shafi^iyy, Imam an-Nawawiyy, al-Bayhaqiyy, and the Hafidh, Ibn Hajar al-^Asqalaniyy.

Unfortunately, there are some people who misinterpret a sahih hadith related by Abu Dawud: "ßá ÈÏÚÉ ÖáÇáÉ"

which means: <<Most innovations are innovations of misguidance.>>

Those who are misguided interpret the word (kul) as `every' and thus claim this hadith means: 'Every innovation is an innovation of misguidance'. Their claim is unfounded for two reasons. Linguistically, this hadith is similar to the hadith related by al-Bayhaqiyy: "ßá Úíä ÒÇäíÉ"

which clearly does not mean: "Every eye gazes the look of the adulterer;" rather, "Most people are guilty of the forbidden look." The person blind since birth would surely not have the forbidden look, and it is known the Prophets would never commit such an abject sin. The word "ßá” (kul) as used in both hadiths refers to `most,' although it can mean "every" it does not mean this in all cases.

I will be more explicit soon.

As a matter of fact, in the explanation of Sahih Muslim, an-Nawawiyy said: "The saying of the Prophet, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, «ßá ÈÏÚÉ ÖáÇáÉ» is among the terms which are "ÚÇã ãÎÕæÕ" (^am makhsus) i.e., a general statement giving a specific meaning; which is a known field in Islam, and the meaning of the hadith is "most innovations are innovations of misguidance." This field the"ÚÇã ãÎÕæÕ" is seen in the Qur'an in Ayah 3 of Surat al-Ahqaf: [ÊÏãÑ ßá ÔìÁ] which means the wind Allah sent as punishment to the people of ^Ad demolished most of the things.

To accept the meaning: "Every innovation is an innovation of misguidance," as the meaning of the sahih hadith related by Abu Dawud would negate the sahih hadith related by Imam Muslim which specifies two types of innovations: the innovations of guidance and the innovations of misguidance. In the rules of the Religion it is not permissible to interpret two sahih hadiths in contradiction to one another, therefore we know the true meaning.

Although most innovations are innovations of misguidance, there are numerous examples of Religiously acceptable innovations. During the Caliphate of ^Umar Ibnul Khattab, ^Umar initiated the gathering of people in Ramadan to pray the Tarawih Prayer in congregation. When he saw the people performing this prayer in congregation he said:

äöÚúãóÊ ÇáÈöÏÚóÉõ åóÐöå"ö"

which means: "What a good innovation that is!" The high status of ^Umar Ibnul Khattab is known, thus it is important to point out ^Umar used the explicit term ÇáÈöÏÚóÉõ "innovation" in his praise. If all innovations were misguided--as some claim--^Umar would not have innovated this practice, nor expressed this praise, yet both al-Bukhariyy and Muslim related this incident. During the era of the followers of the Companions of the Prophet, another praise-worthy innovation took place. Initially, letters like the ba, ta, tha, and ya, did not have dots above or below them. This practice of distinguishing between the letters by using this notation began after the time of the Prophet.

Since the time of the Prophet, many innovations have been adopted. Remembering the birth of the Prophet by doing rewardable deeds is a praise-worthy innovation. It is an honorable event and special to Muslims throughout the world. We rejoice in being members of the greatest nation of Islam--the nation of Muhammad--who was the best Prophet and the best creation of Allah. In Surat Al ^Imran, Ayah 110, Allah said:

(ßõäúÊõã ÎóíÑ ÃõãÉò ÃõÎÑöÌÊ ááäÇÓö ÊÃãõÑæä ÈÇáãóÚúÑæÝö
æÊäåóæäó Úäö ÇáãõäßóÑö æÊõÄãöäæäó ÈÇááåö)

which means: [You are the best of nations brought forth to the people; bidding the lawful (ma^ruf) forbidding the unlawful (munkar), and believing in Allah.]

This verse means this nation is the best of nations by virtue of its Prophet," as explained by the scholars of Islam. Muslims are thankful to Allah for the blessings of Islam and for being among the followers of Muhammad. In Surat Al ^Imran, Ayah 31, Allah said:

(Þõáú Åäú ßõäÊõã ÊõÍöÈøæä Çááåó ÝÇÊÈÚæäìö íõÍÈÈßõãõ Çááå)

which means [If you love Allah, then follow the Prophet, and Allah will love you.] It is fitting to honor the Prophet. The Mawlid (the celebration of his birth) has a great benefit: it inspires the heart to have a more profound love for the Prophet.

ALLAH KNOWS BEST.

SO:

The word "kul" in al-Qur'an or hadith does not always mean inclusively EVERY single entity, it means most. As compared by the Ayah: Surat al-Ahqaf: [???? ?? ???]

Thus, not every new innovation is misguidance. It all depends if it complies with the Qur'an and Sunnah or not.

Millions Celebrating the Birth of Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him, Miladun-Nabiy

• Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam is the last Prophet of Allah, he was born in Mecca on 12th of rabi^ul Awal, over 1427 years ago, and was buried in Medina. He is the best of God’s creations.

• Hundreds of millions of Muslims all over the world optionally but proudly Celebrate the occasion of Miladun-Nabiy, the Birth of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu^alayhi wa sallam. It’s not an obligation to celebrate it, but it’s a good rewardable deed, and certainly it’s not an unlawful or misguided act.

• Muslims join together in love of the Prophet on the day of Mawlid thanking Allah for sending our Prophet as a mercy.

• Muslims join together in al-Mawlid reciting the Qur'an, chanting Islamic praises, telling the story of the Prophet's birth, teaching Religious Knowledge, slaughtering animals to feed to the poor, and gathering to thank and praise Allah and ask Him to exalt the honor of Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu^alayhi wa sallam.

• Over 900 years ago a knowledgeable, and righteous ruler named: al-Mudhaffar, King of Irbil, was the first man to initiate the practice of celebrating al-Mawlid.

• King Al-Mudhaffar made a grand celebration that was attended by many scholars. And he was praised by famous Muslim scholars for doing this great deed.

• Imam As-Suyootiy authored a book about al-Mawlid and named it: “Husnul Maqsid fi ^amalil-Mawlid”. Which shows the great honor of celebrating the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

• The famous scholar of hadith, Abul-Khattab Ibn Dihyah, wrote a book for this king especially to be read during the mawlid celebration.

• Al-Mawlid is a good and rewardable innovation derived from the Qur’an and teachings of the Prophet.

• Prophet Muhammad said what means: “The one who innovates a good innovation in Islam has its reward and a reward similar to those who follow him in it--until the Day of Judgment--without lessening their reward. The one who innovates an innovation of misguidance would be sinful for it and has sins similar to those who follow him in it--until the Day of Judgment--without lessening their sins”

• From such hadith, the scholars of Islam like an-Nawaiy and al-hafidh Ibn Hajar and others said that innovation (Bid^ah) is of two types one that does not comply with Qur’an and Sunnah and that is rejected, and one that complies with Qur’an and Sunnah which is accepted in Islam such as al-Mawlid celebration.

• Among the good innovations was the doing of the followers of Prophet Issa (Jesus) peace be upon him as they initiated a good deed as Allah said in al-Qur’an {wa rahbaniyatan-ibtada^ooha} which means they innovated an act of leaving all worldly desires and detaching the hearts from worldly interests and spending the time for worship. This proves that bid^ah is of 2 types, good and bad.

• Also at the time of the companions, Khubayb innovated a good innovation (bid^ah) by making a practice of praying tow rak^ahs before being killed. As narrated by al-Bukhariy.

• Also Yahya bin Ya^mur innovated a good innovation by placing dots and characters on the Arabic letters in the Qur’an. A dot below the Ba’ leeter, Dot above Noon letter and so on. That was a very beneficial and useful bid^ah accepted in Islam.

• Khalifah Uthman innovated the practice of a second Adhan on Fridays. As narrated by Bukhariy.

• Making Salat and salam on the Prophet after the Adhan is another good innovation practiced by Muslims over 700 years ago.

• And Celebrating the Birth of the Prophet is one of those good innovations of guidance that comply with the Qur’an and Teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

• Let us enjoy presenting our thankfulness to Allah, for sending prophet Muhammad as a mercy to humanity. We are proud to show our love to the Prophet and are proud to present it in celebrations.
We ask Allah by the Virtue of Prophet Muhammad, to bless us by the blessings of the Prophet, to protect our Muslim nation and have mercy upon us all.

??? ?????? ??????? ?? ????? ??????? ??? ???? ???? ??? :
???????? ?????: ?? ???? ??? ????? ????? ?? ??? ?? ???? ?? ?????? ???? ???? ??????? ??? ???? ?? ????? ?? ???? ??? ????? ?? ???. ?????.

Al-Hafidh, al-Mujtahid, Al-Bayhaqiy Narrated in "Manaqib ash-Sahfi3iy:
Innovations are of 2 types, one that opposes the Qur’an and Sunnah or the sayings of the companions or the Ijam^, consensus of the scholars, that is the innovation of misguidance. The second type is what was innovated from the good innovations that has no opposition to any of the aforementioned sources.

??? ??? ???? ?? ??????? ?????? ???: ???? ??????? ????: ?????? ??????: ???? ?????? ????? ??????? ??? ???? ????? ??? ?????? ??? ???? ????? ??? ?????
Abu Na^im narrated from the route of Ibrahim al-Junayd he said: I heard shafi^iy say that the Bid^a is of 2 types, a praised bid^a and a dispraised bid^ah. What complies with the alsunna it’s praised, and what opposes alsunnah it’s dispraised.

?????????? ?????? ??? ???????? ???? ??????? ???? ??? ?????? ???????? ????? ???? ????? ?????: ???? ????? ???? ??? ???? ???? ????: "??? ???????? ?? ??????? ???? ??? ????? ????? ?????? ?????"? ?? ????????. ??????? ????? ?????????? ???????
Bid^a is of tow types as taken from the hadith of ^aisha may Allah’s mercy be upon her as she said: The messenger peace be upon him said: Prophet Muhammad , says in this respect: "He who innovates something that is not in agreement with our matter (religion), will have it rejected.

???? ?????? ??????? ??????? ?? ????? ??????? ?? ??????? ??? ???? ??? ???: "????????? ?? ?????? ?????: ?????? ?? ???? ??? ????? ?????? ?? ???? ?? ????? ?? ???????? ???? ?????? ???????? ????????: ?? ???? ?? ????? ?? ???? ??? ????? ?? ???? ???? ????? ??? ??????" ???.
Al-Bayhaqiy narrated with his Isna also in “Manaqib ash-shafi^iy” that ash-shafi^iy may Allah have mercy upon both of them said “Innovations are of 2 types, one that opposes the Qur’an and Sunnah or the sayings of the companions or the Ijam^, consensus of the scholars, that is the innovation of misguidance. The second type is what was innovated from the good innovations that has no opposition to any of the aforementioned sources, and that is the innovation that is not dispraised.

Allah knows. Best.

SO, it can’t be put any simpler than this:
Innovation (Bid^ah) is of two types one that does not comply with Qur’an and Sunnah and that is rejected, and one that complies with Qur’an and Sunnah which is accepted in Islam such as al-Mawlid celebration.

???? ?????? ??????? ??????? ?? ????? ??????? ?? ??????? ??? ???? ??? ???: "????????? ?? ?????? ?????: ?????? ?? ???? ??? ????? ?????? ?? ???? ?? ????? ?? ???????? ???? ?????? ???????? ????????: ?? ???? ?? ????? ?? ???? ??? ????? ?? ???? ???? ????? ??? ??????" ???.

Which is the saying of Shaifi^iy that is taken from the hadith of the Prophet I mentioned before that the innovation is of 2 types, a good innovation and a bad innovation, just like Imam shafi^iy said.

So O Muslim Nation:
Yes, be honored to celebrate the birth of the Prophet. As long as you comply with the Qur’an and sunnah, there’s no harm on you. If you recite Qur’an in the proper way, and if you praise and mention the prophet in what was mentioned about him, and you feed the poor and rich halal food for the sake of Allah, then there’s no harm on you. And ignore all those who tell you stop making such dhiker to Allah.
