Thanks, I hope I will enjoy and benefit from the company.
The Last Messenger {Respects, Salam and peace is upon him} was advised to inform/invite/warn his nearer ones. All people must be knowing about that Ayah. Now if it is presumed on conjectural information that Syedna Abu Talib had not become muslim and he was an idolator, how could the Messenger warn other idolators since they could have very rationally replied to the Messenger that the most appropriate thing to do is first to convince your uncle and then come to us. Had it been a fact that his uncle had not become Muslim with whom he had very close and lovely relationship would it had not placed the Messenger on a weak footing?

yes Mazhar, there is confirmation that Abu Talib, though was very close to the prophet and often defended him, shamed of saying "No God but Allah", and thus, to the last moment of his life, he kept on saying "on the religion of Abdul Muttalib (worshiper of the idols)"

But brother Abdullah that does not meet the question. On what authority one could call the grandfather of the last messenger as {Allah forbids} worshipper of idols? It is the saying of the Last Messenger reached to us in his own words {قول} and is permanently saved in the Quran "Bring to me the book earlier sent than this Quran OR bring the evidence from knowledge if you are truthful". Knowledge is something concrete, tangible. Such and such person said on the authority of such and such person or it is written in such and such book of history has never been accepted as absolute truth or relied upon totally. These are called conjectures, opinions and hearsay. Messenger's saying lays down the criterion to judge the verocity of any statement; it should either be written in the Book, Quran Or could be proved with the evidence from knowledge. It is for this reason that when Allah tells his messenger about some happening of the past not relating to matterial knowledge, he tells them that he, the messenger, was not present at that point of time and place. Therefore we should never say anything about which we were not the witness and about which we do not find mention in the Quran or find it in knowledge. May Allah bless.
