Praying for the dead and other beneficial deeds
« on: Sunday 19 October 2003, 15:00 »
Allâh ta^âlŕ said what means: "And those who came after them say: "Our Lord! Forgive us, and our brothers who came before us into faith, and leave not in our hearts rancour against those who have believed..." (part of sura AlHashr 59:10).

Ibn Hibbân reported a Hadîth SaHîH whose meaning is: “Read (sura) Yâsîn for your dead”.

Imâm alQurTubiyy said: “Some of our scholars deduced it is lawful to read Qur’ân on a grave from the Hadîth (reported by alBukhâriyy and Muslim) where it is said that the Prophet  (çalla-llâhu ^alayhi wasallam)   divided  a palm leaf in two  and then planted one half on a grave and another half on another grave and said (what means): “May be this will alleviate their suffering, as long as it does not dry”. He said: “If their suffering was alleviated by pieces of trees, what about a believing man reading Qur’ân”.

AlBayhaqiyy*  related that Ibn ^Umar  (raDiya-llâhu ^anhumâ) said: “I heard the Messenger of Allâh (çalla-llâhu ^alayhi wasallam)  say (what means): “When one of you dies, do not emprison him, take him quickly to his grave and read the beginning of alBaqarah next to his head and the end of sura alBaqarah by his feet”. ATTabarâniyy reported the same text, except that it says (what means): “The fâtihah next to his head”.

* In “Kitâbu shShu^ab”.

If he is not a Wahhâbi, he is at least likely to have been influenced by them, for they are the only ones I know who dare to prohibit such beneficial actions. Not all Wahhâbis themselves forbid praying for the dead or reading Qur'ân for them.

In the mean time, your cousin can make du^â' for your dad. If she reads Qur'ân for him away from his grave, she must say then "Allâhumma make the reward of this reading of mine reach my uncle such".

Dedicating rewards to the dead

Some people mention a saying of Imâm ashShâfi^iyy which is: “Reading does not reach the dead”. This refers to reading away from the grave and failing to ask for the reward to be given to the deceased. When the person is next to the grave, such du^â’ to dedicate one’s reward is not indispensable.

Imâm Murtadŕ azZabîdiyy reported that azZa^farâniyy said: “I asked  ashShâfi^iyy about reading next to the grave, so he said: “There is no harm in it”.

Imâm anNawawiyy said (in “Sharhu lMuhadhdhab”) : “It is commendable for the visitor to read a bit of Qur’ân  and then to make du^â’ for them afterwards”.[/u]
