any sisters who sew here?

Asalaamu ^Alaykum

I wondered if there are any sisters here who sew 'Islamic' garments ie jilbab, abaya etc? I sometimes sew jilbabs and am going to make some abayas soon...

Asalaamu Alaykum

well for the abayas and jilbabs that are simple in shape it is possible to turn one you have inside out and copy the pieces onto your own material one by one and cut out, remembering to allow a seam allowance and then take the following steps.  I will try and draw some diagrams sometime InshaAllah, this is the basic instructions for a slip on type abaya or jilbab

1) Sew the shoulder seam together first on front and back pieces
2)then lay front and back pieces out flat on the floor right way up, lay sleeves flat wrong way up, facing inwards on seams where the sleeves should go (so the seam which would be at the top of your arm is on top of the shoulder seam on the front and back pieces), pin sleeves into place
3)Sew sleeves in a straight line down shoulder/arm seam so you should have like a t shape
4)Turn garment inside out, folding in half at shoulder seams and sew up starting from hand end of sleeves, going round to the side seams, all the way down to the bottom hem on each side
5)hem cuffs and bottom hem by folding fabric over twice
6)bind neck with bias binding or ribbon

Good thing you've made some diagrams, it'll help alot in shaa Allah

When you want to post a reply, you have in the options: "Add an attachment", click on it, and then add whatever you want from your pc...

I'll try one now ...
