3Oud, a beautiful scent
« on: Wednesday 13 August 2003, 12:33 »
Once when I was in a lesson, the shaykh I was listening to began to talk about how, in life, we might find ourselves facing struggles and difficulties to reach something which we want.

When he discussed this, he used a beautiful analogy that made me want to smell this perfume named 3Oud.

He said in order to attain this perfume, one needs to cross barren lands and difficult terrain and that person may come across so many difficulties like the strong heat and lack of water in such areas to find this tree from which you can get this beautiful smelling 3Oud perfume. He said it may take weeks to find that special tree.

The way that this shaykh told the story had me so fascinated to find out more, and I hoped to one day smell or even own such a special scent.

Then one day I went into a perfume shop and as I was at the counter, finding out more about the ways that perfumes are extracted, the shopkeeper told me about the long process it takes to get 3oud from such a tree.

Firstly, the trees are very rare and are only found in certain countries of the world. Some of these trees are over a hundred years old. After taking something special from the tree and leaving it in water, oil rises to the top after a long time and this is bottled and is kept for many years. Then the man showed me a small bottle with a dark liquid in it: it was 3oud.. I was so excited because I didn't know they had it in the shop.

He said the bottle (which was about the size of a matchbox) was the equivalent of around $150. I was so excited to smell it, and when I did, it was a scent so special and sweet and full of aroma that I knew what that shaykh had meant in his lesson. And even 5 or six days later the smell was still on my jacket sleeve, almost as strong as it was on the first day!

masha' Allah

I started this topic so that insha'Allah you, my brothers and sisters, who have any information or stories about 3oud would put it here.

take care,
ndya

ma shaa Allah ndya...

Indeed, it seems that we're taking a lesson through the process of extracting ^Oud...

I know that smelling the ^Oud could help when you have a migraine or a normal headache, that's what my teacher told me.

Also, the perfume that the prophet peace be upon him used to use sometimes was from Musk, ^Oud, ^anbar and Kaafur... May Allah raise the rank of our prophet, he used to have a beautiful smell even if he didn't wear any perfume, if he put his hand over a boy's head, they used to know that boy from the smell of the hand of the prophet peace be upon him....
Anas Ibn Malik, his servant, said that he never smelled a perfume that had a better smell than the smell of the prophet peace be upon him.

And now, if you go to the prophet's grave, you'll find a beautiful smell, even the dust that's on the Muwajahah facing the grave have a beautiful smell, I smelled it myself when someone brought some dust with him from there.

Fatima, the daughter of the prophet peace be upon him, when she went to visit him after his death, she graped some sand or sthg like that near the grave and smeled it then said:

???? ??? ?? ?? ???? ????**?? ?? ??? ??? ?????? ??????
??? ??? ????? ??????**??? ??? ?????? ??? ??????

It means that smelling the smell of the grave once is even better than smelling the "Ghaliya" perfume which is a very fancy arabic perfume, very beautiful, then she said that she's experiencing very hard calamities, that if the days experienced the same thing they would've turned to nights...

may Allah raise the rank of our prophet peace be upon him :hearts2

May Allah bless you for this great subject.

Imaam Bukhari reported that the Prophet (Salla Allahu ^alayhi wa sallam)said to the meaning of: "Treat with Indian incense ('oud al-Hindi), for it has healing for seven diseases; it is to be sniffed by one having throat problems, and to be put into one side of the mouth by one suffering from pleurisy."

This prescription was given more than fourteen hundred years ago before aromatherapy was even considered an area of alternative medicine.

Today I was at a perfume shop (but it's so great, it has also Islamic pictures and beautiful rosaries and Madeeh tapes ...), and I wanted to ask about that after reading your post, but I was in a hurry :?, but I am gonna ask about that later in shaa Allah, it seems really interesting.

Let me tell you something about al^oud dear sister, most of us are familiar with the perfume ^Oud and the wood incense ^Oud. However, very few of us actually use these two items for other than basic perfumery. The tree referred to as ^oud is Aquilaria agallocha and is also known as Aloes wood, Agarwood and Eaglewood. The scent that most are familiar with is obtained only after this tree has been infected with a fungal infection. Non-infected trees do not produce the highly fragrant oil or wood. This tree is found in various southeast Asian forests, Bangladesh, Bengal, Bhutan, Burma, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. The scent is reminiscent of vetiver and sandalwood and is extremely long-lasting.

It is important for us to note that the infected tree must be at least 50 years old to produce the oil. Although India was a major producer of this oil in the early 1900's, production has been banned because of the destruction of these trees. (It is not known if the tree is infected until after it has been cut down, an ecologically unsound practice.) Vietnam has banned all trade in this oil as well.

While this oil is extremely rare and costly, it can also be extremely beneficial. Traditional medical uses for^oud include: asthma, chest congestion, colic, diarrhea, diuretic, kidney problems, nausea, thyroid cancer, lung tumors and as a general tonic in China. In Indian Ayurvedic medicine it has been used as a cardiac tonic and carminative (relieves gas from the intestines). It is felt that because of the difficulty in receiving this oil, alternative medicine practitioners have not investigated it. There is some belief that ^oud oil may be useful in treating lymph system disorders, high blood pressure and as an anti-malarial treatment due to its chemical composition and components.

Further research is required into the possible healing properties of this unique oil and to determine its uses in the "seven diseases" mentioned by the Prophet, salla Allahu alayhe wasallam.

Due to its widespread use in Arabia, the prices for 1 kg. of ^oud in the form of oil or wood have risen as high as $10,000.
