a question

Salam...
i have a question... i don't know in which category it may fit..   i'm somewhat embarrassed to ask such question.. but i need... to know. living in western countries like we do now... we tend to have a hard time finding a job that doesn't breach any islamic sanctions. for instance.. i wanna know... is working as a dishwasher 7aram for example? knowing that you'll have to hold cups that may have left overs of wine and alcohol and clean dishes that had pork in it! and knowing the hadith of the prohpet salla Allahu 3alaihi wasallam that the one who drinks, sells, or even holds the khamr is mal3oon! ....? so?
i know this may seem more than a simple question.. but just to be on the safe side... i had to ask.
salam

salam pumarage and welcome to TalkAboutIslam.com

If that restaurant served wine and pork, then the owners are committing a sin by serving that in their own place, and the people who work in that place in like washing the dishes are also making a sin because they're helping the owners to make a sin... The one who helps another one to make a sin sins himself....Not to mention the impurity of pork and what a problem will that cause concerning many things.

My simple advise to you is to leave the work in that place and try to get another one in a better place, and may Allah help you.

What should someone do if he doesn't have a job, is in financial hardship and the only jobs that come up are one's that have Haraam in them?
Financial difficulty could lead to other sins, like stealing, and for an unmarried person who finds it difficult to marry because of his financial cirumstance, might feel inclined to look for other comforts (in terms of sin).

What do you advise?

I think that you can always find a job that's lawful maybe it does not make the same amount of money as a job where you'll sin by doing it, but it's still a job....

What we should do in such cases is patience, one can be patient for not having money, but can one be patient while suffering on the day of judgment for working and sinning?

Many people were so poor, and thhat did not make them go to unlawful jobs, and we should follow them. We ask Allah to help us to do that.

Dear muhammed,

I know sometimes it is hard for people especially in Western countries to find appropriate work but if it came to a situation where there were only haraam jobs around then it would be better for that person not to work. In this case the person could beg to get money but once he or she became solvent then they are no longer permitted to beg.

You see my dear brothers and sisters, once a person starts to become involved in a haraam job there are a number of dangers open to that person. For example, they may start of by having a few items in their store that they are not permitted to sell and then the devil may start whispering to them by saying that they've started now so why not continue to do more and more haraam things in their line of work.

Many people nowadays are prone to having an urge to be rich to the extent that they will betray family and friends and even hurt themselves (i.e. do things that will lead to them acquiring bad deeds) just for the sake of taking home a larger pay packet. But you see what they take home is nothing to be proud of: this world is not so important, money is not that important. We are not here for a long time brothers and sisters and we do not know when we will leave this world.

Also, every cent, penny or dime an individual acquires by haraam means would be a heavy burden on them. It is haraam for them to spend that money even if it is on something like rice or cotton.

masha' Allahu kaan

Remember my dear brothers and sisters, the truthful tradesperson will be assembled on the Day of Judgement with the Prophets and martrys of the battlefield. What an honour for the muslim.  May Allah make us from among those people
ameen

Salam...
brother muhammad... the thing is.. in case of extreme need u may work for some 'arab' or muslim who'll probably pay you much less than the minimum wage. i know it feels bad to work and kill youself working when you may be getting almost half of what you would have got if you worked legally with valid papers. i'm sorry guys.. i really am not trying to insult or generalize arabs or such. i'm an arab myself... but i'm talking about a fact that we see... a job that pays you like 10 or 12$/h... if you work it undertable... 'which is how most of us hire people these days', they'll pay you 5$/h instead; meaning almost half the price... HOWEVER, i think this is a good way out in case of extreme need as you have said. A little patience with this and then Allah will bring you a good job instead insha'Allah. and i beleive this option is better than begging for money too. :) no?
salam.
