Religious Extremism

I am preparing a presentation about religious extremism, especially about those who claim to represent an Islamic trend. Please, can anyone give some ideas about causes of such extremism, and how to face it. Sure, religious knowledge is so important.

welcome Night_23

and a big thank you for seeking the information and not simply listening to the controlled and biased mass media..

I can resume to you many reasons for the so called islamic extremism and I am sure many of our friends here in TalkAboutIslam.com would follow up on this issue.

To start with, there is The Power question. so many extremist sects have been established in the name of islam, just because somebody (the chief) would like to head a group and enjoy all the power privileges associated with that.

Second, you have the financial interest. As you surely know, neither you nor me can negociate with a government or organisation for funding a certain project even if it is a great one.... however, when you are at the head of a certain group, yes you can, you would have a different position.

now, let us get earthy.... is that simply talking ?? na, there are actually true examples.

Take the example of the wahhabies or Wahhabiyya and all I said above would become so clear for you.

there are numerous resources on the web that discuss in detail how this man ibin abdul wahhab, only for the sake of money and power, established his pro-british colonial rule, anti -muslim sect..... and it worked....

and to this day there are thousands who follow that devious sect of wahhabiyya.......

the facts :

Imam Sheikh ibin Zayni Dahlan mentions in his book The History of Makka, how the wahhabies claimed they were the true muslims and called KAFIR (unbeliever) everyone else who does not follow their ideas.... in this way, they considered THEIR right to invade muslims cities, and seize everyone-s property....

Imam Dahlan has  a detailed description of how those extremists, the wahhabies, killed even muslim children, all in the name of islam.....

As salamu ^alaykum Night,

I wanted to add something to what brother Sunshine said, although I think he made the point.

Take the example of Algeria.  This is a country where more than 70% of the population are less than 25.  A lot of those young people loved their religion (Islam) a lot.  However, in the absence of enough knowledgable people teaching religion, this "crowd" turned towards very ignorant people, who claimed to be the protectors of Islam.  In the 70's Algeria was going through a time where socialism was "in" for a lot of people.  This "socialism" brought a new "trend".  A lot of women started wearing mini skirts (which does not comply with Islamic rules or Algerian traditions), alcohol was more and more sold in stores, devoted people were considered by a lot as retarded.  So in the eighties, people got tired of this.  The young people knew the value of Islam, and wanted to be religious.  However, they didn't find the right people to teach him.  Wahabism became popular among certain people as well as other movements which leaders were either extremely ignorants or politically motivated.

I hope this will help.
