Sister Mouyasar, for the person who forgot which rak^ah they are in: according to one scholar they go by the lesser number that they think it might be, for example, if they are not sure whether they are in the second or the third rak^ah, their prayer is not broken; according to that scholar they continue praying and take that rak^ah they are in as the second, as that is the lesser number.

According to another scholar, they can go by the higher number (in the case of the example above, the third rak^ah) as usually the devil likes to whisper and make the believer doubt which rak^ah they are in. This scholar said that going by the higher number would help fight against the doubts the shaytaan likes to put in the heart of the mu'min.
