Asselamu' Alaikum Brothers and Sisters in Islam,

Can someone please give me general information about Eid-ul-Adha? Including its history so that I can print out and give it to children to read.

Jezakum Allah Khair :ulv1

What Is Eid Al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha or Feast of Sacrifice is the most important feast of the Muslim calendar. It concludes the  Pilgrimmage to Mecca.

Celebrating Eid al-Adha lasts for three days and commemorates the prophet  Ibrahim's    (Abraham) willingness to obey God by sacrificing his son Ismael   (Ishmael).

Ismael is the forefather of the Arabs.

Koran   confirms that Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son when  an angel  came and stopped him and told him that Allah accepted Ibrahim’s obedience of His order.

The angel also told Ibrahim that Allah has made it easier for him, and that he was now allowed to sacrifice a ram instead.

The feast re-enacts Ibrahim's obedience by sacrificing a cow or ram.

The family eats about a third of the meal and donates the rest to the poor.

N.B. :  Muslims believe the son to be Ishmael rather than Isaac as told in the Old Testament.

The Meaning of Eid al-Adha
« Reply #8 on: Friday 20 January 2006, 13:33 »
Every year many thousands of sheep, goats, camels and other animals are sacrificed        throughout the world on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha. At this special time, Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is remembered for his humble submission in being willing to sacrifice his son at the command of Allah. We remember that at the last moment as the prophet was about to plunge the knife into the body of his son, Almighty Allah called out to Hazrat Ibrahim (pbuh) to stop and not to harm his son. Instead, Allah provided an animal as a substitute sacrifice. And so, every year similar sacrifices are performed in memory of Hazrat Ibrahim's submission to Allah.

Noor9,

Prophet ^Isa was a messenger of Allah revealed to convey to the people the religion of Islam and to call them to worship Allah, their Creator. Muslims believe in his prophethood and in his truthfulness in conveying that message. Prophet ^Isa is alive now, living in the second heaven, worshipping Allah. He will return to earth before the Day of Judgment and will rule the Muslims with the Shari^ah of Prophet Muhammad. Peace be upon this respected, honored and beloved Messenger of Allah.

And as response to  your post, I will rewrite here what the Eid Al- Adha means for Muslims quoted from our brother  Devoted post….

Meanings behind Eid al-Adha

Bismillah, alhamdulillah wassalalatu wassalamu ^ala Rasulillah,

I will insha'Allah summarize in point form the meanings of Eid al-Adha al-Mubarak and how valuable it is for Muslims.

•   Eid al-Adha or Feast of Sacrifice is the most important feast of the Muslim calendar.
•   Eid Adha is on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah, which is the last month in the Muslim calendar.
•   The 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah is the day when Hujjaj (pilgrims) stand on the mountain of ^Arafat.
•   It is Recommended (Sunnah) to fast the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah.
•   Eid al-Adha concludes the Hajj journey (Pilgrimage) to Meccah al-Mukarramah.
•   Eid al-Adha is followed by 3 days called the Days of Tashreeq.
•   Eid al-Adha commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to obey Allah by sacrificing his son.
•   Muslims believe the son to be Ismail and not Isaac (Ishaq) as told in the Old Testament.
•   Prophet Ismail is considered the forefather of the Arabs.
•   According to the Qur’an, Prophet Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son by slaughtering him.
•   Although the knife was sharpened, but when Prophet Ibrahim came to slaughter Ismail, the knife would not cut anything.
•   He tried the knife on a plant, but it would not cut at all.
•   The reason is that everything that happens in this world is by the will of Allah.
•   Allah did not will for that knife to cut or harm prophet Ismail.
•   Allah protected Prophet Ismail and granted prophet Ibrahim a ram as a sacrifice instead.
•   Today millions of Muslims sacrifice goats and give them it away for the needy and poor people for the sake of Allah.
•   The Muslim family eats about a third of the meal and donates the rest to the poor.
•   What a great meaning it is to help the needy and make them all equally happy and joyful on this day.
•   The time of the Udhiah or sacrifice begins at the sunrise of the Eid day and ends at the sunset of the third day of the days of Tashriq.
