Hey Samsparky
:-DThanx for replying so quickly. I've heard a lot of talk in the media about Jihad, and wondered what it actually is.  I don't know any arabic and have never had the pleasure of reading the Koran, but I've heard it relates to some kind of Holy War against infidels (ie unbelievers, like me) and it worries me a little, my best friend being a muslim and all.

:?re Ramadan, I'm not quite clear on the reason behind Ramadan, and get confused as to why my friend can't meet me for coffee or lunch during this holy month.  I'm told its a kind a ritual cleansing, of prayer and fasting.

Thats about it Thanx :-D

>>>I`ve deleted your link dear... you have to ask a modo before putting , thanks...>>>

Hello Narjoy :-)
I'm glad that your are looking forward to know about the Islam in which it had the answer for all of our live issues
Begining we will try to know what is Islam askfor?
and as I would like you to live in peace I would fight who prevent this to reach to you and this would be the last choice of the following
Tell you about islam and explain what is the islam by showing you that practically not orally
ask you to live under the umbrella of islam to what the islam is
If we prevented to do the above we will fight the people who prvent us from that under the conditions of not to kill childrens , women old people and not to destroy or cut trees and just fight who is trying to prevent you
you could say that all of the above is Aljihad
if you accept the above kindly answer

welcome also to alrowaythi

Jihaad has more than one meaning.

Jihaad can be a person's fight against his evil inclinations. For example to refrain from stealing, to refrain from bad manners, to refrain from lying.

Jihaad can also mean to defend Islaam against those who try to spread wrong information about it and many people defend Islaam with their tongue, pen or compter keyboard everyday.

Some people even might get killed defending Islam such as what happened in Lebanon. A shaykh called Nizaar was defending Islaam from wahhabi extremism and the wahhabis killed him. He died as a martyr - defending Islaam.

What you see today on tv of suicide bombing and bin laaden is not what Islaam is about and is not what Prophet MuHammad taught the people. Such acts are carried out by those who went astray from Islaam's rules. In Islaam if a Muslim promised safety to non-Muslims upon entering their country then he can not betray this promise.

Even if they were in a Muslim country and he promised his non-Muslim neighbour safety, he does not betray this promise.

I hope that covers it - if you have more question please do ask.

RamaDaan is a month that Muslims Fast in accordance with the Order of God. During it, the Muslim learns patience of the 3 types: patience in performing the obligations, patience of refraining from the sins, and patience with the hardships that befall one.

Muslims Fast during this month from Dawn until Sunset each day they are able to fulfill this obligation ordained upon them by God. It is the best month of the year and contains the best night of the year and in it the rewards for the good deeds are multiplied.

I look forward to reading your next questions if you have any :)

:roll:Thankyou to everyone for your very warm welcome.  Although only a very new member, already I feel warmly welcomed.  Further proof that muslims and christians can indeed become and remain friends.  We have much to learn from one another.

:?I have many more questions, and I thank you all for answering them so graciously. My next one concerns the head scarf.....I see many women in my local community who where the scarf over their heads (is it called a veil?), and wonder how, in our very hot climate, they can stand the heat.  I would like to know is it a requirement of your faith that all muslim women must were the veil? Or is it only an option? Related to this is the custom of wearing the hijab (I hope I got the spelling right!).  is it true that all muslim women MUST where the hijab, or is it merely an option?

:-)Please forgive my many questions, but my muslim friend is a new convert, and can't answer my questions.

You are very welcome narjoy to ask all the questions you have :)

About the Hijaab. It is an obligation upon every Muslim pubescent woman to cover all her skin except the face and hands in front of marriageable males.

Hence she uses the khimaar (head cover) to cover her hair and skin which is not part of the face such as the neck.

The niqaab on the other hand is the face cover. It is optional and rewardable.

While we are on the subject, there are parts of the body which a woman must also cover in front of a woman - even her mother. She must cover between her navel and knees.

Also the man must cover in front of marriageable women and other males what is between the navel and the knees.
