by Al Ghazzali, may Allah be well pleased with him

"Our five senses are like five doors opening on the external world; but, more wonderful than this, our heart has a window that opens on the unseen world of spirit.
In the state of sleep, when the avenues of the senses are dosed, this window is opened, and we receive impressions from the unseen world and sometimes foreshadowings of the future. Our hearts are like a mirror that reflects what is pictured in the Tablet of Fate. But, even in sleep, thoughts of worldly things dull this mirror, so that the impressions it receives are not clear. After death, however, such thoughts vanish, and things are seen in their naked reality."

Why in the state of sleep that the window opens?
Why some people have their hearts more transparent to the unseen world and others not?
I'm puzzled by this question .But i tend to believe that people who own more goodness and purity in their hearts are more vulnerable to encounters with the unseen world. But someone needs to be wary of the devil delusions.

Martin, the last two lines of your statment says it all - body + soul makes nafs, the more you are pure the more you are devoid of evil intentions and hence you are beyond the approach of the shaitan (the devil), it actually creates doubt in your mind that could swell to great proportions - you kill the doubt with your inner strength and you remain pure.

Imam al-Ghazali wrote a wonderful book called "Scandal of the Batinites", I read some excerpts but still looking for this book. thanks
