Just an update for all to hear.
« on: Friday 28 November 2008, 15:29 »

:thumbs I finally made to a Mosque today the Friday 1:30 Dhohur.  That is what it is called correct?

Well any way I went to the one I found in Plainfield IN it is about thirty miles and thirty minutes from my house one way.

It was well worth it.  The place is gorgeous, not that it matters how it looks.  They were very friendly and tried to help. :thumbs

I was so nervous and exited and humbled all at one time.  They told me I need to say Salaat in Arabic.  I thought here we go again isn’t better for me to pray in English than not at all.  However, once I got the paper teaching me to speak it in Arabic I understood better.  I was expecting Arabic writing, but it was English letters with pronunciation guide.

I then realized I could learn to say it I thought I had to read Arabic writing.

I was very confused but enthused at the same time. It was great.

I do wish I had more time to talk with individuals.

Over all the experience was very positive, :1God

although I cannot go back for Dhohur because of work I do plan to attend either a Maghreb or an Isha a couple times a week. :1God

I do however have on question.

The men did not have beards nor did they have kufi or turbans, in fact to look at them they looked just like everyone I see at work.

This of course is not a problem I do not think they must look different from everyone else.

However, the women all still had vials, looked very traditional Muslim look, and stayed at back of Mosque.

This seems to me like many of Christian religions that men are allowed to modernize or westernizes in this case, but the women must not change.

Why is this? If I expect women to keep vial then shouldn’t I keep my beard at fist length.
It only seems fair to me.

Glad I finally made it

hello dan, great to hear you on the wonderful experience. I enmjoyed reading your thread.  :)
Islam has set minimum standards for personal modesty, which are reflected in the various styles of clothing worn among Muslims
For your question, muslim women wear the veil, as a simple obligation of maintaining modesty, as stated in the Qur;an and sunaah (the prophet's (peace and blessings upon him) teachings). Men on the other hand, dont have to have veil, but simply be dressed modestly as well, which is The `awrah (private parts to be necessarily covered) for men includes what is between the navel and the knees as stated by the Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam), . Edited!  please ask further if u have any other questions.

Moreover, veil is a must for saying prayers, even if a woman does  not wear it otherwise.

I know that keeping a beard is wajib but what if you have a skin disorder which causes itchy and flaky red skin under the beard.
Question
I know that keeping a beard is wajib but what if you have a skin disorder which causes itchy and flaky red skin under the beard. This skin starts coming off and leaves patches of skin that are red that burn and the skin peels off. there is also patches of hair that fall out. In this case is it okay to trim the beard or shave it. Since  this at least stops the peeling off of skin.
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
We advice you to consult a reliable Muslim dermatologist (physicians specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin and its appendages) and find out if any treatment could be carry out without you trimming or shaving the beard.  Kindly let us know the advice of dermatologist. We will advise thereafter.

Question
I wanted to ask that are we allowed to cut the beard's hair that have extended beyond the jawbone at the side of the face i.e the root of the hair is within the jawbone but the hair have grown is such a manner that they have gone beyond the jawbone and because of this the beard is a bit untidy and not straight. I wouldn't know that they are bigger than the fist's size or not because they are sideways (just near and below the ear) and not at the bottom. So can I shorten them/cut them to make the beard tidier.
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
Since the roots of the hair in your query are within the area of the jawbone, it will not be permissible for you to remove the hair that is beyond the jawbone if it is shorter than the span of your fist. It is, however, permissible and in fact better for you to trim the beard on the entire radius of the face to the extent of a fist (i.e. the hair on the side should also be trimmed). (Aap ke masaail aur unka hal, 7/108 Maktabah Ludhwaniyyah, Fatawaa Raheemiyyah 10/105 Dar al isa’at, Imdad al ahkam 4/346 Maktabah Darul uloom Karachi, Fatawaa Mahmoodiyyah 19/397-412 Jamia Farouqiyyah, Kifaayatul mufti 9/174-178 Dar al isha’at) It the beard is still untidy, you could apply oil etc to keep it straight. If this does not work, we still advise that you undergo a hair straightening surgery. We know people who undertook this surgery and it proved to be quite successful.
In conclusion, we stress that you should not let Shaytaan get the better of you and cause you to shave or trim your beard. The more the sacrifice is on your part the more the reward would be.

oops sorry for the messed up answer. I truly apologise. I was talking about the modesty ireleavant for beard. My bad.
I would actually love to know about beard requirement. From what I have researched and been taught, there are many hadeeths about it.

the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Be different from the mushrikeen: let your beards grow and trim your moustaches.”

i would love to know as well..

This is my point exactly.  It is not just Muslims but many religions will let the male alter his appearance to fit into modern times or surroundings,

While at same time, tell females they are not allowed to change.

Do not get me wrong the Mosque was a great place and I will go again.

However, I was surprised to see men so westernized.

I personally will let my beard grow.

Equability for all

Q.) I want to ask whether it is necessary to wear a cap while praying? Some people say that the prayer is not accepted without a cap or anything. Are there any Hadith regarding this matter?
Q.) Is the wearing of a cap proven from Hadith? Did Rasulullah Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam and the Sahaba wear it?

[/h]

A.) Abu Kabsha (Radhiallaahu Ánhu) narrates that the caps of the companions of Rasulullah Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam used to be round and spacious. (Mirqaat vol.8 pg.246)
It is narrated by Tabrani on the authority of Ibn Umar (Radhiallaahu Ánhuma) that Rasulullah Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam used to wear a white cap. (Ibid)
Hassan Basri (Rahmatullah Alayhi) states that the people (Sahaba - Radhiallaahu Anhum) used to make Sajda (prostrate) upon their turbans and caps. (Bukhari vol.1 pg.56; Rashidiyya)
Mullah Ali Qari (Rahmatulah Alayhi) states that the wearing of the cap has become one of the salient symbols of Islam. (Mirqaat vol.8 pg.246) It is the only outward and unique salient feature that distinguishes a Muslim from a non-Muslim. No other community group or people wear the Muslim type hat.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Would this not mean that a Muslim man should where a turban or kufi

wa 3alaikum assalaam wa RaHmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

The following is the explanation of the Hadeeth from a trusted source:

The Prophet said what means: ((if one knows of an unlawful matter then it is an obligation on one to change that matter by one's hand. If one is not able, then one must change it by one's tongue. If one is not able then one must denounce it in one's heart--this is the least one must do.)) related by al-bukhaariyy
