I'd like to add more information about the process of sugar - wine - vinegar as told by brother Sami Yusuf Islam.
Ethyl Alcohol are produced by fermenting sugar/carbohydrate in an anaerob process i.e free of oxygen. This substance are responsible for the taste like wine. Fermented solid foods and its ethyl alcohol-rich water are permitted to be consumed for no more than three days as prophet Muhammad s.a.w. once drank water from fermented dates.
As long as fermented water stayed in anaerob, it will become khamr (like beer, wine, sake, etc etc) that is haram. Once the khamar are exposed to aerob environment, it will start to react and produce acid. From one of the hadith that reveal about the khamr, it said that when the fermented water are "boil" (I'm not sure what the word in english") it's a khamr, and when the khamr are "cool" than it become halal again as now it's a vinegar. Even though there still be traces of ethyl alcohol in it (usually very tiny small fraction of it).
But be careful with food that were added by khamr-like substance, as its still haram. Also don't use product e.g perfume or soap that was mixed with khamr. Khamr is najis.
Hope that help

khamr is najis yeah..... but this is a question that scholars did not agree on. Rabee3atul Ra2y, I heard, did not consider it so. This is a respected Shafii scholar.

No one single molecule of alcohol can stay in vinegar....

many reasons.....

1) sometimes people give their own personal opinion as if it were a rule of islamic law

2) sometimes people forget exactly what they heard, and they reproduce what they understood ... or rather misunderstood

3) sometimes, indeed, there is no unanimous agreement among the scholars on some issues (vinegar not being one of those)
