Can a Shia marry a Sunni or vice versa?
« on: Saturday 26 July 2008, 08:04 »
Assalamoalaikum
Lets discuss the different issues involved with this question and give our own views as well.
Shias and Sunnis are both muslims. They may have slight variations in the way they practise religion, but those differences in no way make one a Muslim and the other a Non-Muslim. Therefore I see nothing wrong with the marriage between Sunnis and Shias.

There is however the question of what way you want your children to practise religion for example how you would want your child to pray etc. If this question is so strong and the couple is not willing to negotiate a method for both to be satisfied, then It is not advisable. Permissable perhaps, but not advisable.

Assalam Alaikum!

I thought it was completely wrong for both of them to marry each other...

Thanks a lot indeed for raising this issue, because I myself have been puzzled and mislead by people about this.

Though I personally dont think sects should exist, but someone once told me that there is a fundamental difference between the shia and sunni beliefs... is that true?

Although I'm a recent convertee from Christianity, I;ve always heard of controversies between the two sects. Can someone please distinguish them for me so that I can know better? I would be highly grateful.

Alright I'm about to ask a weird one now... but is it alright for a Muslim girl to marry a Christian man?
