Assalamoalaikum
One of the most widely misunderstood concepts in Islam, is the concept of Jihad. Let us shed some light on this subject.
The true meaning of Jihad is to strive (in the name of God). I feel, man's greatest enemy is himself. I think, the true meaning of Jihad is in fact to guard oneself against all evils, and strive to become a better Muslim. There is no doubt that we have been assigned to deliver God's message to others and spread Islam, but the best way to spread Islam is to inspire and impress it on others. I am not suggesting this is sufficient on its own, but I am saying it is the most essential part of Daawa. How can we expect to inspire in others what is lacking in ourselves?
I said above "the true meaning of Jihad is in fact to guard oneself against all evils, and strive to become a better Muslim" ... let me emphasize here that becoming a better Muslim means becoming a better human being, becoming a better citizen, becoming a better servant of God. Islam is a complete way of life, therefore Jihad is involved in striving to becoming better at everything.
The suicide bombing these days around the world, killing of innocent people in the name of Jihad have given rise to the misconception of the term Jihad. I, in no way point fingers to who was in fact behind those killings and bombings, but I can quote this - this was Jihad, this was not part of anything that our religion (Islam) would ever allow.
