Islam Question
« on: Wednesday 12 March 2008, 06:14 »
Good Afternoon,

I am a student at Mt. Hood Community college, and I am just about to finish a World Religions class there; our textbook was “Living Religions – A Brief Introduction” by Mary Pat Fisher. In this book I was introduced into a world of Islam that I was previously unfamiliar with, this history of peace and unity has me asking you for clarification on two matters. I need a Muslim’s response to two questions for my finals project, but I also ask these questions of you for my own curiosity sake, as I am confused between the teaching of our textbook, and the media’s projected images of the Muslim faith.

My questions are this, when considering the extremist Muslims, Is dialog or diplomacy possible with these groups? And, How much of the Muslim world identifies with these groups?

Thank for any help you may be able to supply me with,

Gary

welcome Gary. thank you for caring to ask muslims about Islam.

Dialogue? Yes, some extremists are able to dialogue.... but not all of them.

I'd say most of them are not genuine dialogue partners, as that's after all how we called them extremists , right ?

now how much muslims identify with extremist ideas .....

I am absolutely sure that it is a very slim minority.

the very very vast majority of muslims are peace-seekers people who are ready to live and co-exist with anyone else, no matter what his or her religion or non-religion is

Welcome to our forum Gary

I reckon discussion with most extremist groups is not possible, because many would be simply unwilling to listen based on the stubborness of their extremist beliefs

Many many Muslims, as yusuf pointed out, do not like to identify with such groups. Muslims like to live in peace with others in the world and these extremists do nothing but tarnish the peaceful nature of Islam

Hope that helps

I Thank You Both,

I also hope to hear from more on the issue, as I'm starting to see that as in most cases, a few radicals spoil the image for the masses.

thats what this all terrorism comes in.   :'(
its frustrating to think that people create actions of the religion.
so why not judge the religion solely, and leave people's actions behind?

I believe most all religions mean well, but any religion taken over by zealots with 'mans' interest to extremes because prey and fodder for the machine of war and it's big profits. In short, I concur.
